TIFFIN — The reigning OHSAA Division 3 champions showed why they could return to glory again this year.
The Toledo Central Catholic Fighting Irish proved to be too much for Lexington during a 35-7 Minutemen loss in the Division III Region 10 semifinals on Friday night at Tiffin’s Frost-Kalnow Stadium.
Lexington entered as the 12 seed, beating Maumee and Rocky River in back-to-back upsets. The Minutemen entered the game 7-5 while the Fighting Irish came in 11-1, with the loss being out of state.
TCC came out of the gate firing on all cylinders, when Tyler Morgan was able to punch it from a yard out. The Irish were able to get on the board two more times in the first quarter alone. It was a balanced attack all night. Running back Tyler Morgan finished with 12 carries for 80 yards and two touchdowns, while yight end Preston Fryzel had a big night on the receiving end, finishing with 3 receptions for 83 yards and two scores of his own.
Later in the third quarter, with the score being 35-0, Joey Caudill connected with Brayden Fogle for 50+ yards but fumbled on the run after the catch. Later in the fourth, Caudill once again connected with Fogle on the deep ball, this time going for 66 yards. Caudill then ran it in for a 12-yard touchdown giving Lexington it’s only points of the game.
Brayden Fogle completed his junior season with 4 receptions for 136 yards. Fellow junior gunslinger Joey Caudill finished the night with 9 completions for 256 yards and gave up two interceptions. The TCC defensive line was in the backfield all night. Despite going up against a four-star recruit, Fogle had a nice night.
“He did a nice job of making some big plays, and he’ll look back at the fumble at the end and be upset about himself but what I told him out there is that these are all learning moments,” said Lexington head coach Andrew Saris.
Entering the postseason 5-5 and the number 12 seed, Lexington exceeded expectations. They gave themselves 3 more games to play.
“That’s almost 1/3 of the regular season of extra reps these guys got. For us to get that is extremely beneficial, said Saris”.
Lexington has nothing to be ashamed of.
“One thing I told our guys is that we came in tonight as a village, as a community and a family, and they fought until the very end as that, said Saris.”
This year marks the fifth eve trip to the regional semifinals for the Minutemen.
